When you think of October, what first comes to your mind? Candy, haunted houses, jack-o-lanterns or maybe the beautiful colored fall foliage? At Gillman Honda in San Benito, we love to carve pumpkins to display for Halloween. If you need help carving the perfect jack-o-lantern, we've got you covered!
Here’s Some Gillman Guy Pro Tips for Carving the Best Pumpkin:
Pick the right pumpkin. You'll want one with a thick stem, flat bottomed and no bruises.
Cut the top at an angle. This way the lid won't drop inside once you replace it.
Scoop and scrape. We recommending using the special claw or an ice cream scoop to get out all the gunk. Then thin the side of the pumpkin where you'll carve so it'll be easier to cut through.
Transfer your template. Find a design you like online or create your own. Draw it on the pumpkin then poke holes along the outline.
Carve carefully. You can always cut away more of the pumpkin, but you can't put it back.
Keep it fresh. Rub petroleum jelly on the cut edges to seal in the moisture. If your pumpkin begins to shrivel up, soak it in cold water for up to eight hours.
Create a chimney. Place a lit candle in the bottom of the pumpkin and place the lid on. Carve a small hole where the lid blackened so smoke can escape.
Sprinkle in some cinnamon. When you light the candle, your jack-o-lantern will smell like pumpkin pie.
